I guess the service (or database) is incomplete.
05K5337 and the equivalent 05K5336 each resulted in a
(different but equally uninformative) error message.
The response was not something informative such as "Out of
stock, delivery expected in 6 weeks." or "No longer
manufactured" or "No longer manufactured, but xxKxxxx is an
even better version of the same thing".
The messages were:

After looking at David Ross's advice, I tried 05K5336 on the
www.pc.ibm.com search box, and as he suggested there were lots
of hits. One of the hits suggested a new FRU number 05K5338, and
indeed you can buy one for $us45. I don't know if it's *really*
the same thing. The shopping cart has no link to a description
of the item.
If you look it up on pc.ibm.com (for example)
it says amongst other things:
Product Dates
Worldwide
Announce date: 9 Sep 1998
Planned availability date: 12 Nov 1998
Withdrawal date: 16 Oct 2001
Effective withdrawal date: 30 Oct 2001
Hardware requirements for IBM systems
ThinkPad 600
Effective Withdrawal means that on the given date IBM will have
withdrawn the products from marketing. After that date, the
product can not be obtained directly from IBM.
