This is a silly tip, but it works great!
I buy used Thinkpads because they're cheap. Most are well used, and the
normally matte (flat) finish of the most commonly used keys on the
keyboard have become worn shiny. This bothers me, because I'm just that
kind of guy. :)
I've been able to restore that "new" looking matte finish to those worn
keys using Testor's Dullcote. It's a clear spray paint (lacquer) that
dries to a matte finish, around $3.00 at hobby stores.
1. Clean the keys with alcohol.
2. Mask off everything that you don't want to give a dull, matte finish.
3. Spray the keyboard with Dullcote.
Like with any spray paint, you will get best results in an environment
with the least dust. Make sure to avoid drips. When the keyboard
dries, the shiny worn spots will have magically disappeared! I believe
this can also be used to hide shiny scuff marks on the Thinkpad's matte
outer surfaces, although I didn't try this. I would NOT attempt to use
this on any Thinkpads with the rubberized finish.
